Biography

Maria Martinez Gabaldon started her musical studies when she was 8 years old at Professional Conservatoire “Jacinto Guerrero” in Toledo (Spain) where she finished her Degree with Ludmil Angelov. She moved then to Salamanca (Spain) where she completed her degree in Ethnomusicology and got an Erasmus Scholarship to go to Newcastle University (England). In the same university, she achieved afterwards a Master in Music Performance - Singing (MMUS) with Richard Wistreich. At that point, she wanted to focus in the Early Music repertoire, therefore she went to the Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen (Germany) where she accomplish both Masters of Early Music Singing and Chamber Music with teachers Maria Cristina Kiehr, Gundula Anders  and Jan Van Elsacker.

Maria has also attended several singing courses with Richard Levitt, David Mason, José Hernández and Lambert Climent (Academia de Música Antigua de Salamanca); Masterclasses with Isabel Rey, Alison Pearce (Royal Academy London), Peter Harrison (International Carmona Opera Course), Peter Nelson and Clemens Müller (Liedgestaltung) and Anika Köse (Pop and Jazz).

As a soloist, María has a wide performance experience. She has sung some opera roles, such as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro by W. A. Mozart (Festival Internacional de las Artes de Castilla y León); Donna and Sirenne in Rinaldo by Handel with Company Newcastle Area Chamber Opera; or Mrs. Peachum in the Three Penny Opera  by Kurt Weil. Above all, she has experience in sacred and Early Music: C. Monteverdi Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, many W. A. Mozart masses, J. S. Bach Cantatas, Couperin Leçons de Ténèbres, Vivaldi Gloria, Handel Messiah, etc.

She has sung in assorted Choirs and Vocal Ensembles, such as Antología de la Zarzuela (projects in Qatar with Plácido Domingo), Philarmonischerchor München (conducted by Zubin Mehta and Valery Gergiev), Musica Ficta (Madrid-Raúl Mallavibarrena), Zenobia (Rupert Damerell), Rififi (Frank Golischewski, Trossingen), Bernvocal (Fritz Krämer), Solistenensemble Stimmkunst (Kay Johannsen, Stiftskirche Stuttgart), Kammerchor Stuttgart (Frieder Bernius), Theater Pforzheim (Johannes Antoni), etc. She also participated in Musicals (West Side Story- Newcastle University Theatre Society).

She founded the Early Music Ensemble La Gallarda, performing Spanish music with international Institutions around Europe. Besides, she is also member and founder of the tango group Ensemble de la Plata, and the Early Music Ensemble Anima Risonante.

Currently Maria lives in Germany and works as a concert singer, music teacher and choir conductor.
